When I Couldn’t Understand the Reasons

Good morning, Lord.  How are you?

I’m grateful again today...
for sunrises and meadows
For lakes, and deer, and ducks.

Today, I sat with Jesus at Jacob’s well and watched as you talked with the Samaritan woman.

As soon as I learned of the Samaritans' connection to Joseph, I knew we had to sit here a while.

Gosh how I love Joseph.
I love the story you wrote for him...
The story that he lived.

In a pit.
In a prison.
In a palace.

I love that you were with him when he couldn’t see the reasons.
I love that you gave him favor - always -
with those in authority over him.

I love that you gave him dreams
And the ability to interpret them.

I love that he was unloved by his siblings
Because I understand that ache.

I love that you gave Jacob back someone he thought was dead.

And here we are again circling the prayer...
Will you bring his dry bones back to life?

Oh, breathe,
oh breath of God.

Give him living water like you promised the Samaritan woman.
Give it to me as well.

And while I wonder
at your meadows and sunrises...
I remember that you were with me
when I couldn’t see the reasons.

And you are with me now as I live this life
moment by moment.
Breath by breath
No longer waiting...
But living.
